In January 2025, wildfires devastated Southern California, destroying thousands of homes and businesses and displacing thousands of residents. In the wake of these natural disasters, the Newsom Administration took immediate action to support survivors and help the Los Angeles region rebuild faster and stronger.
From the very beginning, HCD has worked to support disaster survivors. From dispatching team members to Disaster Recovery Centers and serving on the Joint-County-State Housing Task Force to providing funding opportunities for affordable rental housing construction and making programmatic changes to assist and prioritize fire-impacted communities, HCD has played a critical role in the state’s efforts toward recovery and rebuilding.
Governor Newsom enacted a series of Executive Orders to assist fire survivors and facilitate recovery. These orders helped expedite repair and rebuilding and allowed HCD to take additional actions to support recovery efforts. HCD will also continue to serve a role in long-term disaster recovery by administering and implementing housing, infrastructure, and hazard mitigation programs in disaster impacted communities across California.
